Unitarians in Edinburgh

Never has the need been greater for spiritual sustenance and connection to enriching community. Ours is a community of spiritual explorers, rooted in values that affirm unity, inclusivity, and acceptance. Together we seek to co-create a world where everyone is respected, cherished, and loved.

"1776 and All That": Reflections on 250 years of the US and Edinburgh's Unitarian Church (now St Mark's)

This year marks the 250th anniversaries of both the American Declaration of Independence and the founding of  the Unitarian Church in Edinburgh. At first glance it would seem that this is just a coincidence. However, as Miss Marple said, ‘Any coincidence is worth noticing.’
To kick off the events to mark 250 years of Unitarians in Edinburgh,  Frank Cogliano will discuss the connection between these two events and reflect on the significance of the US semiquincentennial based on his recently-published book, Thomas Jefferson Survives: American Independence in His Time and Ours (with Peter S. Onuf).

Services

‘Unitarians in Edinburgh – home for the open minded and tender hearted.’ Our doors are open to people from all backgrounds, including all faith backgrounds and none. Unitarianism is a non-doctrine religion. There are no prescriptions.

Groups

Bereavement and Support Group Grief may be caused by the death of a loved one, but it equally may be caused by the ending of a living relationship. The Poetry and Prose for Pleasure Group meet once monthly, presently on Saturday afternoons, to read and listen to poetry and prose.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is gently bringing our attention to the present moment, invoking our inherent capacity for healing and renewal. It is the basis for transforming ourselves and creating greater harmony in our lives and in society.

Get Married at St Mark's

“Unitarian ceremony can incorporate readings, music, blessings & promises from secular or religious sources. We regularly conduct ceremonies for those who are not members of any faith group, those who find their spirituality does not align with any particular religious philosophy, as well as those wishing to have a ceremony which acknowledges their differing faiths.”

Life Events

Unitarian ceremonies celebrate and commemorate life’s great events in a way that reflects the values and traditions of those taking part. Rites of passage which mark the cycle of life by honouring the birth, marriage and death of an individual can bring joy and comfort to friends and loved ones.

Weddings

Unitarians believe in the equality of all. We are aware that the traditional style of wedding may not be right for everyone, or how they wish to celebrate their relationship. When planning your marriage ceremony, it is important that the ceremony is relevant to you both, and reflect your relationship.

Venue Hire

“The venue – St Mark’s Unitarian Church on Castle Terrace – was totally compatible with the intimacy of the occasion. The appreciative audience thrilled to the warm ambience of the building.” — Kenneth Walton, Music Reviewer, The Scotsman
