Marriage

Unitarians believe in the equality of all, and were active in lobbying for equality in marriage. We were one of the first Faith groups to offer Same-Sex blessings, then Marriages in Scotland. It is our practice to offer, and conduct, weddings of same-sex couples on the same basis as weddings between two people of differing gender.

Unitarians are aware that the traditional style of wedding may not be right for everyone, or how they wish to celebrate their relationship. When planning your marriage ceremony, it is important that the ceremony is relevant to you both, and reflect your relationship.

A Unitarian ceremony can incorporate readings, music, blessings & promises from secular or religious sources. We regularly conduct ceremonies for those who are not members of any faith group, those who find their spirituality does not align with any particular religious philosophy, as well as those wishing to have a ceremony which acknowledges their differing faiths.

Your ceremony need not be confined to a church, or any particular building, and may take place in a setting of your choice.

You may wish to include aspects from other traditions, for example candle lighting or hand-fasting in your ceremony, in agreement with your Celebrant.

There are no prescribed words required for marriage ceremonies in Scotland, and we encourage you to choose, or compose, your own words, which reflect the unique nature of your relationship.

All Unitarian Ministers & Celebrants in Scotland are registered with the Office of the Registrar General for the conduct Marriage and Civil Partnership ceremonies in Scotland.
